DAY 2 OF 7

You Made Me!

God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ Genesis 3:3

Listen and take heed! If you barely have the power to resist it, you definitely don’t have the power to fight through it—so, don’t do it. Influence is never a justification for choosing to sin or to do the wrong thing. In one biblical story, “The Temptation and Fall of Man,” Adam and Eve encounter a situation where an underlying theme of accountability surfaces. After being in the Garden of Eden and being instructed by God not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, Eve disobeys God and does so anyway. Eve blames the serpent for her disobedience. She then persuades her husband Adam to eat from the same tree of which he was also advised not to eat. Adam eats from the tree and uses Eve’s persuasion as justification.

Both Adam and Eve were fully aware they were not to eat from the tree, yet they disobeyed God. As a result, a multitude of consequences was brought forth. Neither Adam nor Eve took ownership and accountability for their choice to eat from the forbidden tree. In our lives, we must take ownership of what we do wrong. Additionally, things that are trendy or done by others is no justification for us to do things we know aren’t right. When we do fall short and sin, be quick to repent, and make every effort not to repeat. Remembering that this first sin committed by Adam and Eve establishes us as imperfect people and that only God himself is perfect, will help us in being accountable. Be brave and take accountability for your actions, whether big or small. Friends, family, or life situations never make you do something. You choose every action in your life.

Pray with us: Lord, help us to be accountable for all our choices, good and bad. Help us to acknowledge our involvement in situations, refrain from blaming others, and seek change to help us better ourselves. In Jesus' name, Amen.
