DAY 2 OF 5

First things first

The greatest lesson I learned in all those many years of having my kids at home 24/7 was to begin my day, every day, with Jesus. It’s a practice I continue even now.

This will be the hardest thing you will have to fight for—for yourself, for your spiritual and mental well-being. After all, most of our battles are fought in our mind and having a healthy mind begins with having a spiritually healthy heart.

For me, getting up very early each morning was key. It gave me the opportunity to align my heart with His, to think about good, right things before the chaos of the day began. It set the tone before the kiddos woke up, before the constant questions and bickering began.

Your “best” time may not be early morning, but I want to challenge you to begin this practice now. Scripture encourages us to begin the morning with new mercies, to have new beginnings each day. It’s a perfect way to restart, to try again, to have a fresh perspective from the disappointments or failures of the day before. It's a quiet opportunity to celebrate the goodness of all He’s given us and to realign our hearts and minds with His, the true center in this crazy world.

Will it cost you? Yes. We certainly love our sleep. But I challenge you to begin your day with Him early tomorrow morning and each day after. I promise, you will never be disappointed.

Father, You know this goes against my nature. You know full well how much I like to sleep in and how difficult it is for me to function in the morning. Right now, I’m asking for your strength to be mine. May my heart and mind align with the truth that I need You to begin my days more than I need a little extra sleep. Give me courage to resist the temptation to roll over and go back to sleep in the morning. I’m setting my alarm right now!
