The Women Who Met JesusSample

The Women Who Met Jesus

DAY 6 OF 6

Will Jesus Satisfy Me?

When you consider the culture, there is no reason that the discussion between Jesus and the woman at the well should have occurred. First of all, she was a Samaritan and the Jews harbored a passionate hatred for Samaritans. They considered Samaritans heretical half-breeds. Most Jews traveling between Judea (in the south, where Jerusalem is) and Galilee (to the north, where Nazareth is) would take a day's detour to avoid traveling through Samaria.

On top of that, there was never any reason that a first-century Jewish man would find himself talking to a strange woman alone. It was obvious from the fact that she was drawing water in the afternoon (instead of in the cool morning with the other women) that she was somewhat ostracized. She must have been very uncomfortable with Jesus sitting at the well when she arrived.

Jesus broke the silence by asking her for a drink. He then initiated a conversation that she found confusing. Using water as a metaphor for spiritual life, He assured the woman that He was able to meet her deepest needs. It took her a while to gather that He was not talking about literal water.

The conversation clincher was when Jesus correctly identified some of her mistakes. She didn't get defensive, but she did try to change the subject. He then told her something that He had been keeping pretty quiet: He IS the Messiah.

In the end, she celebrated meeting Jesus and lead her whole town to Him. Why? Because He made it clear that He knew her faults and still wanted to meet her deepest needs. Our broken attempts to meet our own needs apart from Jesus does not disqualify us. He still pursues us with a desire for redemption and a promise to give us the life we are trying to get elsewhere.

Reflection: On Day 2, you were encouraged to begin praying for someone to talk to about your faith. Take the next step and schedule a time to meet with them to share about Jesus.

About this Plan

The Women Who Met Jesus

Imagine meeting Jesus face-to-face. What questions would you ask Him? In this six-day reading plan, meet women from the Bible who encountered Jesus face-to-face. Find out how Jesus answers relevant questions such as, “Will Jesus forgive me?” or “Will Jesus acknowledge my suffering?” and how He offers hope to each woman in the midst of her circumstances.
