Moving Beyond AnxietySample
Cast
1 Peter 5:7 is one of the most powerful verses in the Bible to help us deal with anxiety. It says, “Cast all your cares upon the Lord, for he cares for you.”
We can understand this verse better by looking at the second part of it. We can cast all our cares upon Jesus because we know that he cares for us. Jesus really cares for us. Without this conviction, we can’t cast our cares upon him.
How can we know that Jesus cares for us? Two realities convince us that this is true.
First, look at the cradle. God so loved us that he sent his Son into the world (John 3:16). The Father asked the Son to leave the splendor of heaven and enter the squalor of this world. Imagine! Jesus purposefully chose to leave the majesty and glory of heaven to enter this world’s sin-filled pigsty. It’s unfathomable when you think about it. That’s like choosing to leave Hawaii to move into a rat-infested slum.
Yet Jesus did. Why? Because of love. He wanted to offer us forgiveness for our sins and a relationship with the Father forever.
Second, look at the cross. It was the most excruciatingly painful death possible. The crucified person died of asphyxiation. But especially imagine the spiritual pain for Jesus. He only knew a perfect abiding relationship with his Father. They were inextricably one, in union life with each other. Yet when he took our sins on himself, he knew that the Father would have to turn his back on his Son. That reality was unimaginable for Jesus.
But Jesus still chose to go to the cross. Why? Because of love. Because he wanted an eternal relationship that badly.
If you ever doubt God’s love for you, look at the cradle and the cross. It’s a love that is so amazing, so divine, that it demands everything from us.
This kind of love especially demands that we cast all our cares upon Jesus. Throw all of them to him. If he cares for us this much, he can surely carry all our anxieties.
How deep is the Father’s love for you (Ephesians 3:16-19). Perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).
