DAY 5 OF 5

At the Feet of Jesus

When we see people that are impoverished and people who are dealt an unfair hand, then if we have the power to help them, we should try to do that. — John Legend

One sister is working her tail off in the kitchen. The other is eagerly learning at the feet of a rabbi. The sister in the kitchen voices concern, and the rabbi says to her,

“You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

Today, we read that and think, Going to church is better than cooking breakfast.

Think about it again though. Until Jesus, the sitting sister never had the choice. Learning at the feet of a rabbi wasn’t even allowed unless you were male. But Jesus opened opportunities for women to become disciples, and it was a radical move.

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)

Where are you on that list? I’m not of Jewish descent, so that makes me a Gentile. What about you? Are you someone who struggles on minimum wage or are you free to make financial decisions at your leisure? Are you male or are you female?

The truth is, we are disciples of Christ because Jesus confronted favoritism and invited all to sit at His feet. Why would He do this? Because Jesus knows that our highest calling is never found in categorical labels. Our highest calling is found in Christ.

No more favoritism in the body of Christ. Only invitation. There’s plenty of room at His feet for everyone.

Jesus, I don’t fully understand the radical change You brought into the world. What I do see is magnetic. It’s brave and bold and necessary. It makes me realize I’m part of a Kingdom that holds freedom within its boundaries—a freedom for all. Give me a hunger for Your Word, an appetite for study and understanding. Knowing You set people free; knowing You will set people free. Amen.

Reflection:

  1. Is there a certain type of prejudice that is common in your heart, your family, your neighborhood, or your church?
  2. How does the Gospel bring healing to matters of favoritism, prejudice, and partiality?
  3. What will it look like for you to love as Jesus loved?
