DAY 2 OF 5

The Peace That Only God Can Bring

There is a simple phrase that often pops up in conversations. Its striking regularity intrigues me: “There is still something missing in my life.” Whenever I hear those words, they remind me of that God-shaped vacuum inside all of us—a great void that only God can fill. When we try to fill this empty space in our hearts with something other than God, our lives remain hollow.

Deep down we know that there is something missing, but we are not sure what to do about it. So we try different solutions. But none of them seem to fill that aching void inside. And we are not at peace.

May I invite you to consider something? I want to suggest that this emptiness within our lives is one of God’s most special gifts. A gift which reminds us that we all, whether religious or not, have an inborn desire for God. This desire is at the heart of our deepest longings. It can only be satisfied when we seek after God and have a personal relationship with Him. Only then do we begin to experience true peace and serenity of heart and mind.

This is peace that God gives. It is a spiritual peace, a peace that lasts and which cannot be taken away from us. It does not depend on everything going well. It is an inner assurance that, ultimately, all is well. Whether we are happy or not. Whether we get what we want or not. Whether we are satisfied with our circumstances or not. Whether we are burdened or not. It is a peace that goes beyond all human understanding. It cannot be grasped by the intellect alone. It is something that must be experienced in our hearts.

Specify one area of your present life situation where you need God’s wisdom and peace.
