DAY 5 OF 7

A Desire for Meaning

Did you hear about that Hollywood dog who was depressed because she didn’t have a meaningful life? She got carried down red carpets in a Gucci purse, but she was miserable that she didn’t make a difference in the world. Did you catch that story in People magazine?

No, you didn’t. Because the desire for meaning is reserved for humankind. Mosquitoes don’t change college majors. Puppies don’t read The Purpose Driven Life. Cats don’t cry out, “But what does it all mean?!” No, most animals are happy with supper, sex, and safety. So why doesn’t that work for us? Why do we long for love, friendship, purpose, and meaningful work? Why do we talk about legacy and impact?

Because of God. Old King Solomon said it like this: [God] has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). God set eternity in your heart. God placed a desire in you to find him, the eternal God and the eternal blessings that endure forever. Your desire to be connected to the supernatural and eternal is proof that you’re not an animal. You’re more than what science’s lab can examine and explain. You have a soul that will never be satisfied until it sees God.

As one famous saint used to say it—Your heart will always be restless until it rests in him. So, seek him today. Study the world around you to know God more. Then, through Jesus, know God better than ever before.
