Dark Waters: The Need for Light
Darkness. There was just something about it that made me cringe as a child. Bedtime would roll around, day-after-day, and there would be the darkness. Again. Waiting. An unsettling feeling that would creep in with a thought telling me, “This is not a safe place.”
As a Christian, today I see I was right about darkness not being a safe place, but not in the way I thought. “We are called upon the waters of great unknown, where feet may fail,” as the song, Oceans, states. The unknown waters found as we step out in faith can end in light or in the dark waters of this world. Isaiah 41:10 NIV says, “Fear Not, for I am with You; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
We must be wary of that which we follow. There are many things that exist in the dark waters of this world. Things that hinder, not help; things that hurt, not comfort; things that are evil, not good. The understanding that “the dark waters are not a safe place” is learned deeply as we walk closer to God. However, we still find ourselves at the edge of a cliff in decisions and thoughts with the dark waters just below each day.
Peter was called out to walk atop the unknown waters. Like Peter, if we focus on Jesus during these times He will strengthen, build, and sharpen our faith in the Light. If we do not, we will sink into the dark waters below.
There is a need for Light amid these tests of faith that can only be found in Jesus Christ Who is the author and perfecter of our faith. He is our Lighthouse in dark waters.
Just as that child-like view of darkness existed, so co-exists the child-like hope of the Light. There is hope! For we are reborn into the Living Hope that is found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the proof of our faith will be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus.
