DAY 3 OF 5

Applying God’s Word Daily

When we read the Word of God, we need to meditate on it. We need to think God’s thoughts that He left for us in the Bible, His love letter to humankind. But it does not stop there. Once we develop the discipline of meditating on God’s Word, we start using it. As we think God’s thoughts, we start obeying His truths and applying them to our daily lives.

The New Testament says that this is how we develop discernment “by the reason of use.” In other words, we take the Word of God and we apply it to all the realms of our lives. First, we apply God’s principles to our thinking, then to our choices, our attitudes, and our actions. As we consistently apply the Scriptures to our lives, our whole worldview changes. Meditation on the Word of God leads to application of the Word of God. We obey the Bible in everything we do.

The Old Testament says that we become what we think. The New Testament confirms this principle saying that we are transformed into the image of Christ by the renewal of our mind. This is done through the reading of the Word of God, meditating on its principles, and then applying them to our lives. When we follow these steps daily, we accomplish what God intended for us to accomplish with the Scriptures. What we achieve is not just an intellectual familiarization with the Bible by reading it throughout the year; we achieve a practical application of biblical principles to our lives. This is how we worship the God who gave us His Word.

We are to measure ourselves by the Scriptures. For example, when the Bible says that we are to obey authority, we need to apply this principle. So we leave for work earlier in the morning so that we do not need to rush, disobey the law by driving over the speed limit, and possibly get a ticket. Similarly, when the Bible says that we should not lie, we do not pretend that we are sick to our boss just to get a day off. We speak the truth in all our relationships.

When we apply the Scriptures to our daily lives, we become transformed into a new creation God intended for us to be through the redemption of His Son. We become the hearers and the doers of God’s Word. In this way, we are the examples of Christ to our family, friends, and the rest of the world.

About this Plan

How to Structure My Daily Devotionals

The Bible is full of transforming truths. Every Christian should know how to read, meditate on, and apply the Word of God to their daily living. While the Bible instructs us to study God’s Word regularly, it gives us freedom in how to do it as long as we follow the basic principles. An effective application of the Bible can change our lives and the lives of our families.
