Youth Encounter: AbandonSample
A SINGLE STEP
“So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him . . .” —Genesis 12:1
Every epic journey begins with a single step. Every major event in history required the prompting by a single action. It is no different in your journey of faith. The journey God has you on began with his prompting and his leading you.
As we look to the life of Abram, God’s call on his life was not conditional, meaning it required Abram to begin by acting. Quite the opposite, the promise to Abram was unconditional, meaning that God was the first to act and call Abram into his journey. Notice the flow of the narrative:
“Go" . . . "I will bless" . . . "So Abram went.”—Genesis 12:1–4
God begins with a divine command “Go… I will bless you and make your name great…” Only after God gives Abram his blessing, then we see Abram acting in verse 4 and beginning the journey to Canaan.
With all of this in mind, lets turn our attention to Abram’s faith. Abram heard the prompting of God to ‘go,’ but Abram had a choice. Abram lived in modern day Iraq (Mesopotamia) and was very much at home there.
“Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan.”—Genesis 12:4–5
Abram could have very well stayed where he was without trusting or listening to God. We see Abram choose to take the single step and begin a journey in God’s purpose. Are you stepping out in your journey with God?
If you find yourself in the place where God has not called you into faith, hear him speaking to you today to take a single step to start your journey just like Abram did.
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”—Hebrews 11:6
