Daily Bible Reading — Sustained by God’s Word of Promise

DAY 22 OF 31

July 22

Introduction

With Jerusalem secure, David and his soldiers go to Kiriath-Jearim to get the Covenant Box and bring it to Jerusalem. In the first attempt, David makes a decision to take the Covenant Box to the home of Obed Edom in Gath. Three months later, he brings the Covenant Box to Jerusalem accompanied with a great celebration. Bringing the Covenant Box to Jerusalem would make the city the religious as well as political center of Israel.

Today’s Scripture: 2 Samuel 6:15 (GNT)

And so [David] and all the Israelites took the Covenant Box up to Jerusalem with shouts of joy and the sound of trumpets.

Today’s Reading

2 Samuel 6:1-23

Reflect

What caused David, on his first attempt, to abort the trip and bring the Covenant Box to Gath? What was the difference in the way the Covenant Box was transported the second time? After offering sacrifices, what did David give to the people? Reread verse 20-22. When David arrived home, what did Michal (David’s first wife and the daughter of Saul) say to him? How did David respond? What are your thoughts about what they said to each other?

Pray

Blessed are You, Lord God, and Holy is Your Name. With thanksgiving for Your many blessings, I joyfully sing praises to You and worship You with all my heart and soul. Amen.

Prayer Concern

Communities of faith preparing for special celebrations.

Tomorrow’s Reading

2 Samuel 7:1-17: The prophet Nathan delivers a message to David.
