Walking With John

DAY 3 OF 29

Believing for Miracles

By: Krystle Porter

I am always impressed by Mary, the mother of Jesus. Her love for God and His Son was evident in her steadfast commitment to Jesus. From the moment the angel appeared, telling her that she would carry Jesus in her womb, to His gruesome death on the cross, Mary accepted her role in God’s plan. I absolutely love Mary’s response in Luke 2:18-19 when the shepherds found the baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph; they recounted their visit from an angel: “And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

With that in mind, let’s jump into our reading from John 2. Jesus is much older now, but we see his mom is still by his side at a wedding with Jesus and His disciples. The thirsty guests had finished off all the wine at the party. Without hesitation, Mary knew what to do: ask Jesus for help. She was so confident He could solve the problem, she told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

My first thought as I read this chapter was to focus on the miracle of Jesus turning the water into wine, which is truly incredible and awe-inspiring. But at second glance, Mary was the one I was drawn to. She knew exactly what to do. She knew that Jesus was the answer. Her faith was so certain, she convinced the servants to obey Jesus!

Mary believed in miracles before they came to be. She trusted Jesus, who He was and what He came to do. After all, she carried this baby in her womb and knew Him deeply.

Think about that, mama. She knew Jesus just like you know your own sweet children—the wrinkles of His little hands after birth, the birthmarks on His body, His cry, His funny expressions, little quirks—they became a part of her. As Jesus’ mother, Mary knew the Savior intimately, as you know your children in a way few people can. You may even be able to predict their behavior in certain situations, right?

This causes me to step back and glean whatever I can from a woman who knew Jesus in this unique way. I trust Mary, just as I would a dear friend, to have unique insight into her child. This mama knew that her miraculous boy could perform miraculous works. And that’s what He did.

Do you need a miracle in you life today, mama? Do you need to be inspired by Mary to believe in a miracle before it has come to pass? Jesus breathed words of life into the writers of each book of the Bible, so it can penetrate through time to reach us today. This story of Jesus changing the water to wine and the mother who knew He would do it beforehand, was not written by accident. It was meant to speak to our hearts!

Friends, let’s be women who believe in miracles before they come to pass. Let’s trust this fellow mama to tell us what is true about our Savior!

Questions to Ponder

-Is there a place in your life where you need a miracle? Write down a couple of things that God brings to your mind.

-Have you ever believed that God would work a miracle before it has happened? Why or why not? Take some time to consider what it would be like and how it would change your faith if you did!

“Sometimes we know what we have to do but we lack the courage to do it. Let us learn from Mary how to make decisions, trusting in the Lord.” ~ Pope Francis
