9 Common Lies Christians Believe

DAY 2 OF 5

Is God gaining new angels every day? According to statistics, there are approximately 151,000 deaths a day. So does that mean God is receiving over 150,000 new angels every day? What does the Word of God have to say about this? I’m glad you asked. Here it is, plain and simple: humans are humans, and angels are angels. This remains so even in eternity. In fact, according to 1 Peter 1:12, angels are intrigued by the interaction between God and His image-bearing humans.

It’s actually better for you to be a human than to be an angel. Think about it – God did not send Jesus for angels. God so loved humans that He sent His Son to become a human (although He never stopped being God) to die as a human for humans! Christ died for people, not angels. Through His resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death for people, not angels. Through faith in the Son of God, we get to experience grace, hope, and complete forgiveness for our rebellion against Him. Angels never get to experience this! What great love He has for us.

Here is our ultimate hope: when a loved one dies knowing Jesus as his Lord and Savior, God does not gain another angel. Rather, God calls another worshipper to come home. Your loved one gets the opportunity to see Jesus face to face. He gets to leave this temporary place for his eternal home in the arms of his loving Father. You can have absolute peace knowing that God and His Word can be trusted. Let the promises of the Scriptures mend your broken heart, giving you confidence that your loved one, if he knew Jesus, is more alive today than you are—not as an angel but rather as a fully glorified human being with a perfect heart that is no longer susceptible to sin, a mind that is no longer susceptible to depression, and a body that is no longer susceptible to disease or death.

Questions for Reflection:

What is the most helpful way to care for someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one?

Name a time when someone ministered to you when you were grieving. What specifically did this person say or do that really helped you?

Truth:

God is not gaining new angels; rather, He is calling worshippers home.
