What Do Women Fear?

DAY 2 OF 5

Day Two: Afraid of the ADT Installation Guy

Hebrews 13:6: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” I spent my early parenting years just south of Miami, Florida, in a neighborhood that was frequently burglarized and had zero white picket fences. Our across-the-street neighbors were robbed of their, I want to say, 40 guns? Maybe 50? Whatever the number, their too-many guns were removed from their house by some variety of hooligan. Their house that, let me reiterate, was located DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET from mine, was broken into and stripped of all it’s many, many death machines.

So, I obviously, insisted that we have an alarm system installed within the hour. And Brandon, my frugal pastor husband, pushed back. I insisted. He declined. I was adamant. He was unmoved. I promised to find a new place to live that was farther from robbers and bullets whether or not he decided to join me. We got the alarm system.

But, let’s talk about ADT installation guys real quick. Why do we trust them, anyway? They are total strangers who can come into our homes and memorize the floorplans in the name of security! So, did I wonder about the criminal history of the ADT installation guy? Sure. Did I immediately change my passcode when he left by calling the ADT headquarters in case he happened to see over my shoulder when I input my alarm code for the first time? That’s only for me to know.

The point is, I got an alarm system. I got a backup code. But, I wasn’t fixed. I didn’t stop feeling anxious just because any future brush I might have with danger might be accompanied by a loud alert.

Our bodies aren’t safe here, no matter how hard we try to protect them. But, our souls are untouchable because of the blood of Jesus. We can live in a state of rest because we know that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:38-39.)

-- What measures do you take to protect yourself? Do you lock your doors? Have an alarm system? Double check that your baby is breathing at night? Ask God to help your heart rest in the soul security that Jesus offers. Seek to stop looking for false security in this world, that is anything but safe. Ask Him to help you take your eyes off of the threat of evil and to, instead, keep your eyes set on things that are eternal.

About this Plan

What Do Women Fear?

What does the gospel say about your fears? What does it say about the irrational ones, like sinkholes in the Target parking lot? How does it speak to the rational ones, like PET scan predictions? And does the gospel have a word for the fears you feel you'll have for life, like the possibility of losing the one you love most?
