James describes two types of wisdom and gives us a litmus test for discerning between them. Earthly ‘wisdom’, rooted in envy and selfish ambition, leads to disorder and every evil practice, whereas ‘the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere' (James 3:13-17).
