Hello Mornings: Start StrongSample
A Simple, Consistent Start
My brother is a long-distance runner, and seeing him cross the finish line for the first time inspired me to become a runner as well. I found a training plan for an upcoming half marathon, but there was just one problem. The training plan I chose was too difficult for me. It was designed for someone who had running experience. Within weeks, I was completely burned out and overworked. It was awful, and I gave up.
Two years later, I began running again. I found a training plan designed for beginners, and over the course of the next few months, I fell in love with running. I actually looked forward to my training days!
Developing a new morning routine with God is no different. If you set goals that are too hard, you will eventually burn out and give up. Start small. Give yourself attainable goals. If you’re not an early riser, don’t make it your goal to be out of bed at 5:00 AM for Bible study time. You’ll undoubtedly be searching for that snooze button and miss your time with God. Not only that, but what is supposed to be the most amazing part of your day, will become more like a chore.
When it comes to time, God desires quality over quantity. Yes, your time with Him will grow at some point. But in the beginning, focus on giving Him your best. In John 6:1-14, all the young boy had to give was five loaves of bread and two pieces of fish. What if he had chosen to hold back because he felt it wasn’t enough to give?
Don’t be afraid to start small, and be persistent like the widow in Luke 18:1-8. Give God what you have to give, and watch Him work in your life. You will be amazed at what He can do with small beginnings.
What do you have to bring to God today? Spend some time in prayer asking Him to show you where to begin and how to be consistent.
