Judah’s Captivity Symbolized
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2#See ch. 2:1 “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of #See ch. 2:3, 5 a rebellious house, #Isa. 42:18; Matt. 13:13who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are #See ch. 2:3, 5 a rebellious house. 3As for you, son of man, prepare for yourself #ver. 4, 7 an exile’s baggage, and go into exile by day #ch. 4:12; 21:6; 37:20; 43:11 in their sight. You shall go like an exile from your place to another place #ch. 4:12; 21:6; 37:20; 43:11 in their sight. #See Jer. 36:3Perhaps they will understand, though#12:3 Or will see that they are a rebellious house. 4You shall bring out your baggage by day in their sight, as baggage for exile, and you shall go out yourself #[2 Kgs. 25:4; Jer. 39:4; 52:7]at evening in their sight, as those do who must go into exile. 5In their sight #[ch. 8:8]dig through the wall, and bring your baggage out through it. 6In their sight you shall lift the baggage upon your shoulder and carry it out at dusk. You shall cover your face that you may not see the land, for I have made you #See ch. 4:3a sign for the house of Israel.”
7 # ch. 24:18; 37:7 And I did as I was commanded. #[ver. 3]I brought out my baggage by day, as baggage for exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my own hands. I brought out my baggage at dusk, carrying it on my shoulder in their sight.
8In the morning the word of the Lord came to me: 9#See ch. 2:1 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, #See ch. 2:3, 5 the rebellious house, said to you, #[ch. 17:12; 24:19; 37:18]‘What are you doing?’ 10Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: This oracle concerns#12:10 Or This burden is #[ch. 21:25]; See 2 Chr. 36:11-13the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are in it.’#12:10 Hebrew in the midst of them 11Say, #[ver. 6] ‘I am a sign for you: #[ch. 24:24]as I have done, so shall it be done to them. They shall go into exile, into captivity.’ 12#[2 Kgs. 25:4] And the prince who is among them shall lift his baggage upon his shoulder at dusk, and shall go out. #[ver. 5] They shall dig through the wall to bring him out through it. #[ver. 6]He shall cover his face, that he may not see the land with his eyes. 13#ch. 17:20; 19:8; 32:3; [Hos. 7:12] And I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare. And #[2 Kgs. 25:7; Jer. 32:4, 5; 52:11]I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, #[2 Kgs. 25:7; Jer. 32:4, 5; 52:11]yet he shall not see it, and he shall die there. 14#[2 Kgs. 25:5]; See ch. 5:10 And I will scatter toward every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops, #See ch. 5:2and I will unsheathe the sword after them. 15#See ch. 6:7And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them among the countries. 16#ch. 6:8, 9; 14:22 But I will let a few of them escape from the sword, from famine and pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the nations where they go, #See ch. 6:7and may know that I am the Lord.”
17And the word of the Lord came to me: 18#See ch. 2:1 “Son of man, #[ch. 4:10, 11]eat your bread with quaking, and drink water with trembling and with anxiety. 19And say to the people of the land, Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: #ch. 4:16 They shall eat their bread with anxiety, #ch. 4:16 and drink water in dismay. In this way #[ch. 32:15; Zech. 7:14] her land will be stripped of all it contains, #ch. 7:11, 23on account of the violence of all those who dwell in it. 20#ch. 6:6And the inhabited cities shall be laid waste, and the land shall become a desolation; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”
21And the word of the Lord came to me: 22“Son of man, #[ch. 16:44; 18:2, 3] what is this proverb that you#12:22 The Hebrew for you is plural have about the land of Israel, saying, #[ver. 27; ch. 11:3; 2 Pet. 3:4]‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to nothing’? 23Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel.’ But say to them, #[ch. 7:7, 12]The days are near, and the fulfillment#12:23 Hebrew word of every vision. 24#ch. 13:23 For there shall be no more any #ch. 13:6, 7false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25For I am the Lord; I will speak #Isa. 55:11 the word that I will speak, and it will be performed. #Isa. 13:22 It will no longer be delayed, but in your days, #See ch. 2:3, 5O rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it, declares the Lord God.”
26And the word of the Lord came to me: 27“Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, #[ver. 22; Amos 6:3] ‘The vision that he sees is #ch. 38:8; Dan. 8:26; 10:14; [2 Pet. 3:4]for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’ 28Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: #[See ver. 25 above] None of my words will be delayed any longer, #[See ver. 25 above]but the word that I speak will be performed, declares the Lord God.”
