The Truth Project Scriptural DevotionVoorbeeld
Does the Lord really look with special favor on the poor? Is there some sense in which the gospel has been designed specifically with them in mind? The Bible seems to say so. That's because God helps the helpless, not those who imagine they can help themselves. To be without resource or recourse is to know firsthand what it means to need a Savior. And to experience this need firsthand--to feel it from the heart--is to draw another step closer to the One who delights to comfort and sustain. Do I understand God's unique regard for the needy?
I realize, Lord, that I am poor and destitute -- that, regardless of economic or social status, I desperately need Your mercy and Your grace. Thank You for directing Your thoughts toward me constantly of the true nature of my condition, lest I be tempted say, "I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing" (REV.3.17). Let me never forget the plight of those whose needs are even greater than my own.
