Dag 2 van 10

“The Wise Warrior”

Go through and read today's scripture.

We don’t know much about this “wise woman” in the book of Samuel, not even her name, but in a few short sentences we learn exactly what she is about. It’s like her 140 character bio on Instagram, or how her best friend might introduce her. In that time, women didn’t have much say in what happened, so for a woman to call the attention of a male leader and he listen, this was a big deal. It shows us her strong character.

A rebellion is happening around her and her city is under attack, and I can imagine this is just annoying the heck out of her. Maybe she has kids running around, maybe she was trying to cook dinner, or catch up on the latest issue of Good Housekeeping. Rather than passively waiting for someone else to save her city, she had the courage and the wisdom to do what needed to be done.

But a wise woman in the town called out to Joab, “Listen to me, Joab. Come over here so I can talk to you.” As he approached, the woman asked, “Are you Joab?” “I am,” he replied. So she said, “Listen carefully to your servant.” “I’m listening,” he said.

Joab stops what he is doing to listen to her. What we know of Joab is that he was ruthless. I picture him being a big guy, the trained assassin type, scaling the city wall for his next victim. For him to stop and listen to a servant woman is a pretty big deal.

How did Joab know this servant woman was someone he could listen to and trust? She built a lifestyle of wisdom and established her character to be honest and steady. She built a foundation for herself so that others were willing to listen to the wisdom God called her to.

This wise warrior was willing to listen to God and act on what He called her to do. In her case, it was throwing the head of the enemy over the wall to Joab, but I doubt that will be what God calls us to in our lives now. But, whatever action we are called to -- we need to stand ready with wisdom and confidence to do what is asked of us.
