Know What You Believe: A 5-Day Devotional for Unwavering Faithနမူနာ
What Do You Believe?
It’s important that as Christ-followers, we know why we believe in Jesus and can discuss it in a clear, concise way. In Matthew 16, Jesus asks the disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” After giving their answers, Jesus then asks them to tell him who they think he is. Verse 16 in the chapter says that Simon Peter replies to Jesus, stating, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
In his simple reply, Peter clearly stated his belief about Jesus and who he was — the Messiah whom they were told about.
We are called to clearly state our beliefs about Jesus to others, just like Peter. 1 Peter 3:15 says that we should have a defense, or answer, prepared concerning the hope that is in us. Our answer doesn’t need to be long, complicated, or sermon-like. We simply need to be able to communicate what Jesus represents in our life and why we believe in him.
The Bible calls believers a peculiar people (1 Peter 2:9 KJV). To be peculiar means that we might be considered strange or odd or even unusual. In a normal context, this might be offensive and carry a negative connotation. But as children of God, we can rest confidently in how we stand out everywhere we go, especially in the workplace.
The light in us might draw attention our way. Coworkers, bosses, and even friends may begin to pay attention to why we stay after work to help another coworker or why we go out of our way to speak to our boss. Every day, we’ll be given an opportunity to share that Jesus is Lord. When we are able to clearly state our belief about Jesus, we invite him into the dialogue. Those around us begin to realize that we are motivated by something different than they are. This can transform our relationship with them, and it might even transform their relationship with Jesus.
Perhaps you’ve never thought about what you might say if given the opportunity to defend your hope in Jesus. Challenge yourself to create an answer that represents you and what you believe today.
