Daily Bible Reading – August 2023, God’s Saving Word: Encouragementနမူနာ
August 27
Introduction
In today's reading, Paul describes those who will "hold to the outward form of our religion, but reject its real power" (verse 5), and Timothy is instructed to "keep away from such people." Jannes and Jambres are mentioned as examples of those who opposed the truth. Their names are not mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures; but according to Jewish tradition, these were the names of the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses (see Exodus 7:11, 22). Timothy is encouraged to be faithful to what he has been taught, remembering that everything in Scripture is useful for teaching people how to live.
Scripture Reading
2 Timothy 3:1-17
Today’s Key Verse: 2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living.
Reflect
In verses 1-5, Timothy is given a brief description of how difficult the "last days" will be. According to these verses, what will some people be like at that time? How does what is described here differ from the ways Christians are to live? Consider reviewing the reading from August 15 (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11) and what Paul says about how one is to live while awaiting the Day of the Lord.
Pray
Holy God, thank you for the gift of your Holy Scriptures and for the spiritual nourishment they provide me each day. Help me to read your teachings carefully and to interpret them wisely, so that I may find the timeless truths in your ancient words, be obedient to your will, and grow in knowledge of you. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
2 Timothy 4:1-22: The apostle Paul encourages Timothy to preach the Good News.
