Red Light Green Light: Saying "No" So We Can Say "Yes" to Godနမူနာ
Here are some practical steps that will help you to know when you should say yes and when you should say no, so that you may say yes to God’s plans for you:
1. Understand your priorities. Know what is important to you and what you should be focusing on. Your priorities may change during different seasons of your life, so it is important to take the time and evaluate these priorities and compare them to the will that God has for your life.
2. Plan your week and your day. You must plan not only your week but each day so that you have a rough idea of what else you can or cannot add to your schedule. You only have 24 hours in a day, so don’t overbook your schedule!
3. Make up your mind to be present. If you say yes, commit to that yes. Don’t be half in and half out. Commit to your commitments!
4. Be firm. Don’t say maybe later, not right now, or I’m not sure when you mean to say no. Don’t be afraid of saying no, and don’t feel guilty for doing so! Be firm, don’t expect your hints to be considered an answer.
5. Buy yourself some time. Give yourself the necessary time to make a firm decision so that you can weigh out your options and go over your best possible decision.
6. Be polite about it. Use the yes, no, yes concept. Present the existing options to the individual asking for your assistance, and don’t be afraid to explain the realities as to why you can or cannot take part in their project.
Saying no is hard, but it doesn’t have to be.
By learning the best methods to turn down opportunities, and knowing when to say yes and say no, we can also make time for the opportunities that God has put in our lives.
