Christian Discipleship 101Sampel
Selfish or self-less?
We are taught early in life, things like, “take care of yourself because no one else will! Look out for yourself because others are looking to take advantage of you.” Many of these common, in-home teachings taught us the spirit of self-preservation. But, that’s not how Jesus lived. He confronted evil without regard for His well-being. He helped the poor, widowed and downcast without looking for anything in return. And, He selflessly sacrificed His glory in heaven to come down and live among sinners like you and me, in order that we might be saved.
But, while we marvel at Jesus’ highest display of selflessness, we live in a world that is absorbed with self. However, disciples are required to live differently. We are commanded to live humble lives, sacrificing and yielding to the good of others before ourselves. But why? Because Jesus knows it is better for the soul to give than to receive. It is better for the heart of man to share freely rather than to hoard.
Consider your selfish ways today. Be truthful, is your selfishness preserving you or is it preventing you from sharing and giving to others?
