Identity and the False Self

A spring rose does not struggle with its identity—it simply glorifies God as what it was created to be.

We have all likely experienced someone mistaking us for another member of our family. We hear them say, “You take after your father,” or “You have your mother’s eyes.” We carry on the traits of those who came before us—we carry characteristics of their image.

But this identity-inheritance is not only limited to how we look, it spills over into nearly every aspect of our lives, including what we believe about ourselves.

The false self focuses on the lies that the enemy throws at us. Lies that drive us away from God and away from our purpose.

When we believe the lies that say who we are is not enough, we begin chipping away at the foundation of our God-given identity: being unconditionally and unequivocally loved.

The King of the universe created you to live in a personal relationship with Him. Under His ultimate authority, we are all called to thrive in the goodness of God’s love. In this, we also have a responsibility to care deeply about each other as members of the same heavenly family.

However, what we do with this divine mission is completely up to us.

Our decisions will either be navigated by our fears, or what God says to be true.

Reflection: What in your life needs to be surrendered to God so you can better reflect His image?

Prayer: God, thank You for creating me to be a part of Your family. You call me Your own, and that is what I am. Please show me the masks I have claimed that do not align with what You say is true. Amen.

Have your fears and insecurities led you into an identity that feels foreign? How drastic is the difference between your truest self and the image you project to others? In partnership with LUMO and OneHope, and based on a sermon by Pastor Tyler Staton, this 7-day plan will lead you in exploring the startling truth behind “the false self.” We would like to thank LUMO, and Tyler Staton from Bridgetown Church for providing this plan.
