Overcome Strongholds

The word stronghold is only found once in the New Testament. A stronghold is a fortified place, a place of security, and in this case, it refers to places where the Enemy stands strong. Satan’s strongholds begin with a wound—a festering sore—something painful that might emerge from a broken home, abuse, the death of a loved one, or abandonment - real or perceived. The Enemy then capitalizes upon the injury and uses it to execute a destructive plan. In this way, strongholds become breeding grounds for addictions of all kinds.

The devil’s plan has always been to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). His mental onslaught begins with a barrage of lies—little deceptions that, if allowed to flourish, quickly grow into mighty fortresses. Below are examples of common lies from the Enemy that perpetuate strongholds:

  • You’re not good enough.
  • No one truly loves you.
  • Everyone is going to leave you.
  • You don’t matter.
  • No one cares about what you have to say.
  • You’re powerless.
  • You’re stupid.

If you’re under attack, take heart! Even though tearing down strongholds is hard work, Jesus has called you to freedom. His love for you knows no bounds, but you must have faith and confess that he is Lord and Savior. You must repent and believe in your identity as a beloved child of God.

As you tear down Satan’s strongholds, seek your heavenly Father through prayer and the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to take control. You will need intercessory prayer warriors to help you along the way, so also seek wise counsel from church and fellow Christians. You’ll soon be on the road to freedom.
