Uncommon

DAY 30 OF 40

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 ESV

Parents have the ability to shape the world one child at a time. We can help our children win by first winning the hearts of our children. We should encourage our kids in front of others, not belittle or make fun of them. We should praise the character we want to see in them and enter into their world of fun. Children should be treated fairly. They have a voice, and they deserve the honor. There is dignity in their personhood, so we must avoid shaming at all costs.

We ought to take time to learn how our children receive love because every child is different. The standard is not, “I will show love the way my dad showed me love.” The standard is “I will show love the way my child receives love.” The power of honor infiltrates a home, a city, or a nation like no amendment or civil right can. Here are some more parenting thoughts before we close the week:

  1. Apologize when you’re wrong.
  2. Unfairness breeds resentment.
  3. Show them honor.
  4. Dignify your child’s personhood. Just because you can get away with verbally bullying, condescending, or demeaning your kids, don’t.
  5. Avoid shaming at all costs!
  6. Show them affection the way they hear it best! Going to work is an excellent expression of love, but it doesn’t speak as loudly to a child as touch, words of affirmation, and quality time.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. Go through each statement above and discuss.
  2. Which statement above stood out to you the most and why?
  3. Which statement above do you feel needs the most work in your parenthood right now?

About this Plan

Uncommon

The purpose of this devotional is to take a deeper look into the "uncommon" living for those of us walking with Jesus. We are declared holy through Christ, so how do we walk in that holiness? How can we be set apart and walk out our holiness?
