God's Redemption Story (The Prophets)

DAY 33 OF 40

Hosea – Day 3

Charles Spurgeon, a well-known pastor in the 1800’s, once wrote in a sermon the following.

“Believer, look back through all thine experience, and think of the way whereby the Lord the God has led thee in the wilderness, and how he hath fed and clothed thee every day—how he hath borne with thine ill manners—how he hath put up with all thy murmurings, and all thy longing after the flesh-pots of Egypt—how he has opened the rock to supply thee, and fed thee with manna that came down from heaven. Think of how grace has been sufficient for thee in all the troubles—how his blood has been a pardon to thee in all thy sins—how his rod and his staff have comforted thee.”

How beautiful to recognize how God has loved us far more than any other human could. God called Hosea to love Gomer, even as she repeatedly rejected Hosea, in the same way that he loved the people of Israel. When we feel Hosea would have been justified in his anger, he instead followed God’s example and sacrificed for her to lead her back to him.

As sinners, we find hope in the knowledge that God loves instead of taking a justified approach. May that hope spur us on to show this same love to others!
