Faith Explored: Navigating the Christian Worldviewनमुना
Day 3: The Christian Worldview and the Meaning of Life
Ever wondered what we have to do with our lives? What is the purpose of our lives? These have been deep questions sought by philosophers since ancient times.
Naturalism wants you to believe that the universe is the result of a cosmic accident and man is a blind product of matter plus time plus chance. Atheist evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins writes,
“The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.” (Richard Dawkins, River Out of Eden (London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson,1995), 133.)
The Christian worldview begs to differ. We are here for a reason, not by accident. We have a purpose and meaning for our life given by the Maker of universe. The greatest purpose a human can have is to know God Himself, and enter into a relationship with Him. There is no other pursuit in life that would be nobler and eternally rewarding than that. The atheist’s cry is accurate: If there is no God, life is without ultimate meaning, value and purpose.
Philosopher and Theologian Dr. William Lane Craig expounds in his book Reasonable Faith, that two conditions must be met if life is not to be absurd: Firstly, God must exist, and secondly, life shouldn’t end at death. If there is no God, it follows that there is no immortality. Each individual person just ceases to exist when he dies and no ultimate meaning can be given to his life. Whether a person existed or not at one point in time doesn’t matter, if he eventually ceases to exist. If our lives are ultimately meaningless, the activities we fill our lives with are also meaningless. In that case, all the relationships, jobs, contribution to the development of society, charity becomes ultimately meaningless. Even with immortality alone, we cannot find significance to life and the universe. It would still be just a meaningless, unending life. We need God to give meaning to our lives.
Application:
According to the Christian worldview, your life is valuable, purposeful, and doesn't end at the grave. Therefore, everything you do in this life matters and echoes throughout eternity.. As we explore the meaning of life, let us remember that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and our existence resonates throughout eternity.
