In my Bible, the heading of this passage is “Shine Brightly for Christ.” Paul is urging believers to present their lives, just as he has, as an offering completely for God. When we choose joy, it allows us to walk in what we are called to do without complaint. Joy compels us to live as bright lights in a dark world.
When I think about joy, I always think about a friend of mine that lives her life this way. Every time I see her, she has the biggest smile. No matter the circumstance, she comes with encouragement and hope. Being around her is like a breath of fresh air. That is how Paul is encouraging us, as believers, to live. We are called to be a light to the world, bringing hope to the hopeless through that which we cling to in Jesus, the ultimate light of the world. Paul goes on to say that when we live a surrendered life and cling to the hope that is given to us, it doesn’t matter what happens in life or even in death, we can still have joy.
Prayer points:
- Ask God for hope and to help you choose joy.
- Pray that God would reveal situations where you can be a breath of fresh air to those you encounter today.
