The Value of Authenticity

Pastors and leaders need to live in light of the fact that they are human. In 2 Corinthians 1:8-9a Paul honestly discusses some of the trials he went through. He didn’t hide his struggles or that he was even in despair. Many pastors and leaders feel they can’t be open and vulnerable to admit that they are having a difficult time. They may feel that they must always be having victory in Jesus.

The apostle Paul wanted people to know the truth about him and the things he was going through. He spoke the truth about himself and didn’t put on a false front. He was willing to admit his weaknesses. In 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10 he shared about a physical weakness that plagued him and God’s response to his need. He said: “I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me . . . For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Some pastors and leaders feel that people will not respect them if they know their weaknesses. However, people do respect those who are able to share their weaknesses. It helps them to know that they are not the only ones who are struggling with living the Christian life. More importantly, they know their pastors and leaders are truthful and people of integrity. People already know pastors and leaders have weaknesses, but it gives them credibility when they admit it.

Jesus modeled this as he faced the reality of the suffering he would experience on the cross. He admitted his neediness. Mark 14:33-34 tells us that: “He began to be deeply distressed and troubled.” The text further says he was “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” He didn’t keep it to himself. He shared his need with Peter, James, and John and asked them to stay with him. He needed their support and presence.

If we are tempted to pretend that we don’t have needs or don’t need others’ help we are in a dangerous place. We are ripe for burnout or temptation. Pastors and leaders must be authentic in sharing their needs.

Reflection

Are there needs, weaknesses, or temptations that you are hiding from those around you? Prayerfully ask God to show you one person with whom you can be vulnerable and authentic this week. Find a time to share and pray with that person.
