Lent Journeyनमुना
DAY 13
Two robbers
The two robbers on both sides of Jesus on the cross must have been important in the bigger picture of Jesus’ crucifixion, since they are mentioned in all four of the gospels. The robber on Jesus’ left challenges Him to save Himself and them. The robber on the right who at first taunted Jesus, now asks for forgiveness and asks Him to think of him when He arrives in paradise.
I wonder what I would have said to Jesus if I was on a cross next to Him. Maybe:
“You are the Messiah. Save yourself and save me as well!”
How is it possible that Jesus could just surrender and die such a powerless death? How could God allow it? Surrendering is a sign of failure, weakness, incomprehensible and ugly. I wonder if there were other, better ways to accomplish forgiveness.
Or:
“Think of me.”
Why would I ask Jesus to think of me when just a few moments ago I ridiculed Him. Maybe it is because I heard how Jesus asked his Father to forgive the soldiers. But these words still make me feel like a chancer with a last minute request. How can I think that one simple prayer will fix everything? But then, in a way it does make sense. I’ve got nothing to lose. A chance is a chance?
EXERCISE
• During your time of prayer, you are invited to become aware of the fact that God looks at you with compassion – in times when life is good and in times when you are weak. Speak to God about your feelings about this.
