The Only One

In biblical times, a woman who had become betrothed to a man went around in public wearing a veil. That veil was a code; in Hebrew it said mekudheshet, or “I’m spoken for.” It was her way of saying that her eyes were now reserved exclusively for her bridegroom. In Psalm 141, King David makes this passionate statement: “You are my Lord and my God; I only have eyes for you” (v. 8, TPT).

David utters this cry in a time of difficulty and danger. He is surrounded by “experts in evil” who want to entice and entrap him. But David resolves to keep his eyes fixed on the Lord. He will not fall into their traps. He knows how a person’s eyes can lead them into sin. So he fixes his attention and affection in an exclusive way on God. In the same way, guard your eyes and say, “I only have eyes for you.”

God wants an exclusive love. He wants us to have eyes only for him. Ask him if there are any areas in your life that draw your affection away from him alone. Confess those areas and ask him to remove those idols from your heart. Then say to him, “You’re the only One.”

Psalm 141:8 The Passion Translation

“But you are my Lord and my God; I only have eyes for you! I hide myself in you, so don’t leave me defenseless.”
