Exploring Thriving Through Ephesians

Paul seems to recognize the challenging picture of relating in God-honoring ways he's put forth in these few chapters. I picture him thinking, "how can I help them see all that is available to make them strong warriors in this battle here on earth?"

So he begins to explain all that the Spirit offers us in terms of weapons and armor that we can picture in our mind's eye. It's tangible and able to be handled.

From head to foot he equips us. He gives us a helmet to protect our heads and brains. This reminds me of the descriptors that we learned in chapter 1. I want my brain to be telling me the truth about who God is and who I am, and the helmet of salvation seals that in place. The truth in chapters 1 and 2 about who we are and who we used to be are like the belt that surrounds us. Truth like this grounds me, keeps me realistic about myself, and thankful for all I've been given. The belt of truth holds my garments in place- remember chapter 4? We've put on new garments since becoming a part of God's family and the belt holds them secure.

Chapter 3 reminds us that we can approach God's throne with complete confidence because we are "in Christ". We are given his breastplate of righteousness when His blood is applied to each of us.

And as we think about new garments, how does a shield of faith and gospel shoes strike you? Paul is showing us what should capture our time and attention. A life full of faith in God's working in and around us; and feet that are moving towards others with this great news. These articles of clothing certainly make us stand in striking contrast to the culture around us.

I love that he finishes this list with the sword of the Spirit being God's word. Since he is writing to encourage them with truth, and in fact used many words from the Lord when he was with them in person, it seems fitting for God's word to be elevated as armor for daily use.

He ends with a request for them to pray. He has given them (and us) a beautiful example in chapters 1 and 3 of how he prayed for them, and now he wants them to imitate him in this. He tells us to pray for others who are "in Christ" and specifically pray for him.

We are equipped to live.  We've been given righteousness, adoption, and so many other blessings. I can feel Paul's love for the church in Ephesus with each word that he writes to them. He wants them to walk well and worthy. The Father wants the same for us, so he preserved this letter for us!

What encourages you from all the pieces of armor you've been given?

Which piece of armor are you most in need of and why?

Who are the "Pauls" in your life who have spoken, modeled, and cared for your faith? How can you pray for them?
