Your Action Reflects God

What is the picture of God you have in your head? I think we all picture God a little differently, but a lot of us picture Him in heaven—either watching the earth, reveling in praises, or maybe lounging while everyone serves Him. This picture is what causes us to struggle to think of God as a God of action. Maybe we’d concede that God was more active during Old Testament times, but He certainly doesn’t seem so active today. However, this is a wrong assumption.

All three parts of the Trinity are described as beings of action:

God did not create, then leave. He has not lost the motivation to continue to be active in every minute detail of the earth. He created, planned, and redeemed, and He is still creating, fulfilling His plans, and redeeming His creation.

God does not sleep, God does not stop, and God does not need to rest. In Genesis, when He took a day of rest after creating the earth, He did so as an example to us—not because He was tired or needed to rest.

Jesus is said to be at God’s right hand, interceding for us. As Romans 8:34 says, “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” Interceding is not an inactive word. It means to negotiate, beg, plead, or pray. While He is in heaven, before He returns, Jesus is active for our benefit, protection, and good.

The Holy Spirit is described as a teacher, reminder, and supporter to us in our daily lives. As John 14:26 states, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” The Holy Spirit is active in a supporting role to God’s people.

Does your view of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit reflect the kind of action we see ascribed to them in Scripture?

As you have read your own reflection of God’s image having a great deal to do with action, how does reading about God’s current action encourage you?

Growing as an Enneagram Three: The Achiever

The Enneagram is an ancient personality typology. The theory behind it is that a person assumes one of nine personalities in childhood as a reaction to discovering the world as a scary, unkind place, and thus unlikely to accept their true self. This devotional is designed for Enneagram Threes, also known as the Achiever.
