Key Chains: Trusting God's Timing

As a standard process for the mechanic I take my car to, they ask for your keys so that they can move the car about as needed. I entrusted the keys of my car into the care of the mechanics as I went about my day. Upon coming back to the mechanic, my key chain had completely unraveled, leaving me with a handful of keys. In an effort to keep my keys intact, I rummaged through my belongings to try to find an extra key chain.

While I was looking for the extra key chain, I recollected all the key chains I had thrown away over the year, regretting the fact I had tossed them aside, and thinking that I had missed out. How many times does something that you did not expect fall apart? How many times do we go through unexpected heartbreak and all we have left are the pieces of what once was whole? A marriage that held a family together is suddenly ripped to shreds, a relationship headed towards the aisle suddenly ends, and life around you seems to be in shambles.

I relate this to my keychain because there was nothing wrong with my key ring. It was completely intact. Then, without warning, it became useless. How many times do we lose something sacred to us in life, and we begin to think of all of our “missed opportunities?” We go through our minds trying to figure out the “should haves, could haves, and would haves.” However, God does not want us to live a life of regret. He tells us in His word to forget the past and to focus on what is new and in front of you (Isaiah 43: 18-19). We have to get away from regretting our past, and look to the future of hope! Even if the keychain unraveled, or something that we didn’t expect falls apart, we can’t think of the things that have come and gone. We have to set our sights on the new thing that God has in store for us.

When I finally stopped trying to find a key chain in my house, I remember I was going home for the holidays. Surely my mom had a spare keychain hidden in the house somewhere. I would just have to wait a couple of weeks. The thing about God’s blessings is, you will oftentimes have to wait. However, you can be sure that the day will come, even though you do have to wait. In the wait, God will hold you together, just like I found a temporary solution to hold my keys together. The bible says “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

So I patiently waited until I got home. I had ordered a bag a month prior to me losing my key chain. I asked my mother for the package, which was shipped to her home instead of my own since I knew I was coming home for the holidays. Immediately she handed me the box that had inside of it a beautiful leather bag. I had completely let go of the keyring situation, knowing that I would find one in due time. I started to investigate the bag and look at the different aspects, and my eye came across a part of the bag that I left unwrapped. I unwrapped it slowly to find a beautiful designer key chain, with a strong stainless steel ring. I couldn’t believe it! It came and I didn’t even expect it.

Firstly, like my keychain, God will give you something way better than what you have lost. Secondly, God sometimes takes you through wilderness situations, so that when He does give you that keychain, or that blessing, you are all the more appreciative of it. Thirdly, God knows what’s going to happen before it happens. Meaning God knew my keychain would unravel, so he provided another even before I lost the initial key chain. God is already putting things in the works for you if you have lost something. He is already setting things in your favor. All you have to do is wait!
