The Lord's Supper
We are forgetful people. We wake up, we do stuff, we forget about it, and we move on to the next thing. Some of us can’t remember what we ate for dinner last night.
Letting go of the past isn't always a bad thing, but there are some things Jesus wants us to remember. Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, helps us remember what Jesus did on the cross.
In Jesus’ last meal with His disciples, He broke bread and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then, He held up His wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:23-26, ESV).
When we take communion, we are remembering Jesus’ body broken for us and His blood shed for us. We remember the lengths He went to so we could have a relationship with God.
We remember that every promise in the Bible now applies to us because that moment on the cross started a new covenant between God and people.
When we remember what Jesus did on the cross, we remember why we don’t shrink back when life doesn’t go as planned.
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).
Jesus knows we are forgetful by nature. The farther we get from the moment when He changed everything, the easier it is to lose sight of the miracle we’re living in.
When life is hard, the Lord’s Supper reminds us of when Jesus brought us out of the darkness and into the light. When life is great, the Lord’s Supper reminds us that we did not earn the life we’ve been given.
Wherever you find yourself today, grab some bread and juice. Spend time remembering Jesus’ sacrifice for you. Raise your cup with gratitude, and know that if Jesus came through back then, He will do it again.
Reflection Questions:
- Why is it important to practice communion as a spiritual discipline?
- Spend some time remembering all that Jesus has done for you. Write down some ways your life is different because of His sacrifice on the cross.
