Studying and Memorizing God's Word
Spiritual disciplines are not an obligation that God requires of us to be holy or righteous. Spiritual disciplines are tools that we use to deepen our relationship with Him. This is especially applicable in studying and memorizing God’s Word. A part of healthy relationships is getting to know a person’s likes and dislikes, what makes them happy or upset, and what makes them feel loved. God knows who we are on a deep, personal level (Psalm 139) and He chose to have a relationship with us (John 3:16). But like any good relationship, it must be mutual; both people must be invested. This is where studying and memorizing Scripture is so valuable for us as Christians. In Psalm 119:11 it says, “I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.” The author’s desire is to know God and His Word so well that he won’t do anything to hinder their relationship. As you spend more time in God’s Word, you will start to know God more. You will learn His likes and dislikes. You will learn who He is and what He is like. But most importantly you will learn how to love Him more which is what He truly desires. As you start practicing the spiritual discipline of studying and memorizing God’s Word remember that God loves you and wants you to know him more, and reading His word is a great way that you get to explore and discover more about God.
Set aside 5-10 minutes every day to read the Bible. Write out the verses that stand out to you, and work to memorize a few scriptures.
