Faithful in the Small Things
“But Mom,” whined Lainey. “I want a puppy so bad! Our cousins got one last week, and it is so cute! Why can’t I have a puppy?”
“Lainey, you’ve shown you can’t take care of fish, and dogs are a lot more responsibility.”
Lainey’s shoulders slumped. She knew her mom was right but kept her eyes glued to the floor.
“Also, I made you a deal that if you kept your room clean for a month, we could get a dog, but you haven’t been faithful with that yet either. I need to see you be faithful in the small things first before I trust you with a big item like a dog.”
Have you ever been in a situation like Lainey? It is important to be faithful in the details, before you move on to bigger responsibilities. Maybe your parents have set a homework goal before you start your own business or try out for the soccer team.
Or maybe your parents have asked for you to practice taking care of your younger sibling before you start babysitting for other people. Whatever the situation, it’s important to practice faithfulness in little ways to demonstrate that you can be trusted with bigger items.
Even more than getting a new pet or trying out for the soccer team, God has amazing plans in store for you. But unless you are faithful in the small things like reading your Bible on your own, obeying your parents, or praying about things that trouble you, it will be hard for Him to trust you with more. Let’s continue to grow in faithfulness so we can be trusted with more.
Jot down some small things you know you need to be faithful in this week (and all the time). Ask God to help you do them with a spirit of faithfulness.
