Money and the Single Mom: By Jennifer Maggio

Your diligence will pay off.

First, if you’ve made it to Day 7 of our time together, thank you! Committing to grow in the area of finances is like committing to lose weight – usually not fun! But when I’m reminded of the wide open, spacious life, that Paul writes about in 2 Corinthians 6:11-13, I can’t help but think that the temporary sacrifice of discipline will yield great results (Hebrews 12:11).

We’ve talked about why money management matters, ways to save, the poverty mindset that can hold us captive, and critical components of money management. Today, I want to talk about breakthrough. When I became a single mom at eighteen, I moved into government housing and utilized food stamps and welfare. May I be honest? I was humiliated. While I didn’t grow up wealthy, we had never been so destitute that we needed government assistance. The government officials I had to meet with quarterly didn’t make it easier either. They were often rude, degrading, and demanding. It was a very dark time of my life, as my money problems only exacerbated the other problems I faced such as worry, heartbreak, loneliness, fear, etc.

Today, as we close out our time together, I just want to speak (write) the Word of the Lord to your heart:

  • God shall supply all your needs. Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
  • Christ paid for an abundant life. John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
  • God has a plan. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "'For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
  • God knows you. Luke 12: 7 says, “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
  • Seek the Lord, He’ll add all else. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
  • Obey and blessings follow. Deuteronomy 28:1 says, “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth."
  • Do not choose to worry. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
  • You don't serve a God of lack, but abundance. Psalm 23:1 says, “The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing."

Moms, I am praying the God of all hope moves you into a place of peace with your finances as you learn to trust in Him and His provision.
