God Secures Justice

Many scholars think this psalm was written while David was a member of Saul’s staff. Perhaps he wrote it during the time when Saul’s paranoia was out of control and the world seemed quite chaotic. Lies were spread about David and that made life difficult for him, so in this psalm David is pleading with God to be rescued from these evildoers and protected from their violent and evil plans.

Near the end of the psalm, David’s tone changes and he cries out in praise, reminding himself of God’s justice for the poor and needy. God upholds their cause and secures ultimate justice. Perhaps David is reminding himself that God can do the same for him.

God is just. God is and will always be an advocate for those who are afflicted. We are made in God’s image, so justice should be a longing for us as well. Are we outraged when we see injustice happening in our communities or around the world?

When our lives feel like they are falling apart, remember that God is just. When people spread lies and rumor about us, call out for God’s justice rather than trying to get even on our own.
