God’s Got This! – 5 Lessons from Exodus 14:12-14

Day 5. “Be silent.”

With their backs up against the wall—that is, with their backs against the Red Sea and their faces toward the approaching Egyptian army—the Hebrews grumbled. They grumbled to Moses, they grumbled against the God who was leading Moses. It’s such a natural response: grumbling!

That’s what’s behind the final admonition Moses gives to the Hebrews—and by extension, to us today: “The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent” (Exodus 14:14).

After reminding Christ-followers in the early church of Jesus’ extraordinary rescue of us (see Philippians 2:1-11), the apostle Paul encouraged them—and us—to do this: “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing” (Philippians 2:12-14).

That is, there comes a time when we must rest in the truth that the same God who created and sustains the heavens and the earth is for us, with us, and is ever committed to work in us and even through us to bring hope to others amid tough times!

God’s not forgotten us. He’s not “watching from a distance.” He’s closer than we can imagine—so close that He lives inside of us (see Ephesians 1:13; 1 Corinthians 3:16).

So let’s respond in faith as we face whatever challenges we find behind or in front of us. Let's respond in faith as we confidently trust our great God to bless, guide, use, and keep us for all eternity: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you” (Romans 8:11).

So . . . Moses’ final admonition to God’s people and to us is that we need to silence our grumbling and watch God work!

When your back is up against a wall, the fifth step of faith in affirming that “God’s got this!” is to "be silent"!

God’s Got This! – 5 Lessons from Exodus 14:12-14

Moses led the Hebrew people out of Egyptian slavery . . . only to find themselves backed up against the Red Sea. Perhaps that's how you feel right now: trapped. Good news! There’s hope in God’s Word! Let’s look at Exodus 14:12-14 (ESV) to unpack five ways to respond in faith and face whatever challenges you find in front and behind you—and to say, with confidence, “God’s got this!”
