Words Timed Right

It’s not just what you say but when you say it that matters.

King Solomon pronounces in Proverbs 15:23 ‘A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season how good it is!’ and again in Proverbs 25:11 that ‘the right word at the right time is like precious gold set in silver’.

Immense good comes out of learning and making a conscious effort to speak the right words at the right time. As mentioned in Proverbs, it is invaluable and priceless (precious gold set in silver) when we know how to speak the right words at the right time.

Being sentient to the emotions of people is crucial in learning to speak the right words at the right time. If someone is disturbed, agitated and angry, we wait for that emotion to pass before we communicate with them so that it is better received by that person. Sometimes it may require us to meet in a completely different setting before presenting our proposals in business deals so that is better welcomed by the person.

Therefore, it is paramount that we need to request God not only to know the right thing to say but also the right time to say it. Timing is everything. Speaking a word of encouragement over a person who is not in a difficult situation would not mean anything, however when spoken in a time of disappointment and discouragement would make a world of a difference. This requires wisdom, and it is God who gives us wisdom to use our words powerfully to say the right thing at the optimal time.

Lord, even as we draw lessons and insights from Your word on how to use our mouth rightly (the tongue of the wise), we ask that You will give us wisdom to know not only what the right thing to say is, but also the right time on when to say it so that it can bless people and make a difference. We ask for wisdom to do this. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tongue Of The Wise

We all have regrets on our choice of words in certain situations and carry the guilt of what we have spoken in the past. In this devotional, we will learn the biblical ways to guard our tongue by imploring God to bless us with wisdom to know how to utilize our words in a right manner.
