Day 1

Many years ago, I found myself standing at a t-intersection on a quiet country road several hours drive from the city I called home. My friends and I, all amateur astronomers, bundled out of our cars, and looked up into a sky festooned with more stars than we had ever seen, or could ever see from the city. It seemed to me they were hanging on the ends of invisible threads, dangling just out of reach.

No one spoke, lost in our own thoughts. For me, on that country road, staring up into the night sky, I beheld the evidence that the apostle Paul referred to in Romans 1:20. Even the invisible, even the smallest of spaces and particles, were created by God. I knew in that moment that, ‘The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship’ (Psalm 19:1 NLT). In the beginning, in the darkness, everything was formless, empty. The Holy Spirit was hovering above the surface of the waters, waiting for God to speak so that form could be given to all things. Every plant, every tree, every flower, insect, animal, every person, shaped by the love of God in that moment. Let there be light, God said, and there was light.

On that country road, I saw order and beauty, and I was astounded that God, almighty creator, had given me the ability to appreciate it. Here in front of me was creation shaped by the Word of God, the Word who is Christ. The Word through whom everything was created. Every star, every grain of sand, every person brought into existence through Christ (John 1:3).

On that country road, I looked up into His glory, and realised just how amazing is His love.
