HAPPY

“I just want to be so happy, Lord, I need you..”

Many people say the phrase, “I just want to be happy,”  but what does that truly mean? As a Christian, we are not exempt from experiencing pain on earth. However, the emotional reality of sadness does not mean we cannot still simultaneously have hope and everlasting joy through the temporary pain.

When we look at the life of Jesus, even He wept as stated in John 11:35. Even though Jesus was fully aware that God had the power to raise Lazarus from the dead, He still wept. This is a great example of acknowledging that our pain is real, even in the midst of knowing who God is. Acknowledging your pain is actually healthy, as we see in Matthew 5:4, “blessed are those who mourn for they shall receive comfort.”

Once we have come to terms with acknowledging our pain, we shouldn’t lose hope. God reassures us that there is something greater ahead. Our time on earth is limited and there will come a day when we will all see the Father who works everything out for the good of those who love Him. This hope is what sustained Paul through his various trials, and it is the same hope available to you today.

Emotions are real, but not the final answer. This is why we must not be dictated by our emotions, but cling to the hope provided by God’s promises. Yes, we may currently be in pain, but that does not change the promise God gave us of a day where there will be no more pain. Persevere, knowing that greater days are ahead.

Prayer: God, though I may be experiencing pain, help me to realize that this is temporary and you have a greater future awaiting me.

Action: When you find yourself experiencing pain, repeat to yourself of God’s promises and what He says is in store for your future.
