UNCOMMEN: A Glorious BurdenПримерок
A Debt He Didn’t Owe
You’ve probably read this passage many times. You can imagine the scene played out in your mind as you read about the events leading up to Jesus going to the cross. If you haven't seen the movie "The Passion of the Christ" by Mel Gibson, I would highly suggest you take the time to experience this played out in a beautiful yet sobering visual.
Jesus experienced a brutal on-going beat down that may not come across fully on the pages. No mere human could have taken that kind of abuse and still carried his cross to his place of execution; it took the Son of Man to accomplish what we could not.
The sheer amount of blood loss and pain would have made any other person pass out during the torture. But Jesus was there to experience every punch, whip, and a slap to the face without fail. He was to be the substitutionary sacrifice that would pay for all of the sins of the world. No one was more innocent, and no one was more worthy than Jesus to be that sacrifice.
When someone asks me what makes Christianity so special compared to other religions around the world, I tell them about the crucifixion. Jesus became fully human and laid down his life to pay for (past/present/future) sins.
Romans 5:6-8 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
I owe a debt I could not pay. He paid the debt he did not owe!
Uncommen Questions:
Take a moment to mentally experience what Jesus had to go through for your sin. What emotions come to mind?
Do you live your life like it was paid for by someone else?
Uncommen Challenge:
Don't wait for Easter to come around to read about the beautiful sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf, and by all means, don't take it for granted.
