Women of the Bible You Need to MeetParaugs
Abigail
For further reading see 1 Samuel 25
Abigail is an exceptional woman burdened by a bad husband. Her intelligence is noted, and contrasts with his foolish meanness. Because of his bad character, he puts not only her but the whole household in danger. Abigail acts quickly to save her people. Abigail would have been expected to obey and support her husband. But she acts against him here, because to do so will save many others. She also shows wisdom in discerning the work of God in David. She is brave not only in disobeying her husband but in confronting David. Her words to him show that his desire for revenge is wrong. David shows his difference from her husband by humbling himself upon hearing her wise advice. And when her husband dies, he marries her, recognising the value of a partner who speaks difficult wisdom. This story shows us that wisdom requires discernment and courage. The wise should be valued.
How do you react when someone gives you difficult wisdom, and is this something you need to grow in?
PRAYER
God, those who speak for you are not always easy to hear. Give me the humility to hear your voice in hard words. Amen.

There are many women we know well from the Bible: Eve, Sarah, Mary. But there are others who are less known to us. This series will look at 22 biblical women. We see midwives, daughters, queens, prophets, disciples, teachers, mothers and grandmothers. Why have these women been included and named in the Bible? What do they have to tell us about God and about ourselves?
