Generosity and the Psalms

Dear Soul, Remember You Serve a Generous God

As you’re reading through today’s psalm, keep these questions in the back of your mind: Do I serve a generous God? In what ways does He show me his generosity?

When you think about God, what are some of the first words that come to mind to describe Him? Loving? Kind? All-knowing? Or, maybe for you, this question brings up even more questions. Maybe it makes you think, what do I really think about God?

It’s something that, as Christians, we tend to forget to meditate on. We can be quick to focus on ourselves, our wants, our shortcomings and our needs in our prayer life, but slow to call to mind who God really is.

The practice of reminding our hearts who God is is sacred. It helps settle our souls into the knowledge of whose we are. In turn, we remember who we are.

When we read Psalm 103, one descriptor of God stands out among the rest: generous. This psalm is chock-full of free gifts that God pours out to us, His children. Each line holds golden nuggets that serve as reminders to our souls.

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—” David writes (Psalm 103: 2). He proceeds to tell us of all the ways God generously pours out His overwhelming love for us:

He forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases (Psalm 103:3).

He redeems your life and crowns you with love and compassion (Psalm 103:4).

He satisfies your desires and gives justice to all the oppressed (Psalm 103:5-6).

He is gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love (Psalm 103:8).

He doesn’t treat you as your sins deserve or repay you for your shortcomings (Psalm 103:10).

His love for you is as high as the heavens (Psalm 103:11).

As you go through your day today, remind yourself of these beautiful, generous gifts God bestows on you, beloved child of God. Not because you earned them—but because You belong to Him. Let your soul marinate in His loving generosity today and every day.
