Maybe you read a verse like this and think it sounds like a platitude or just a nice saying to make people experiencing something difficult feel better. But these words were spoken by Joseph, after his brothers had turned against him, having him sold into slavery and then telling his father he was dead. He was betrayed. He was forgotten. He was overlooked. So these words weren’t just a nice-sounding saying he threw out with no experience of hard times. This was a conclusion he came to when everything had fallen apart and God still worked in the midst of it. This doesn’t mean God makes bad things happen. It means God can take even the worst things and bring good from them. It means our difficulties don’t get the last word and the hardest things can even accomplish the best things. God can take the worst of circumstances and use them for good. In other words, God is not limited by circumstances. We can count on that so that when things feel hard and hopeless, cling to the truth that God can work anything for our good.
