Prepare the Way: John the Baptist and JesusPavyzdys
Prepare the Way
This is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’” (v. 3)
A parent tells a child to get dressed and ready so they don’t miss the school bus. A coach instructs her team to be ready to play hard from the opening tip-off. A meteorologist forecasts an upcoming winter storm and tells people to have their snow shovels ready. It is important to be prepared.
John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus’ arrival and earthly ministry. John’s ministry was mostly conducted in the Judean wilderness. Crowds of people came from the cities to this remote area. John’s garment of woven camel hair and diet of locusts and wild honey caused him to stand out as a person who rejected an earthly life of luxury.
John knew his role. In verse 11, he says of Jesus “he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.” When we repent and place our faith in Christ, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered to live as his followers in the kingdom of God. Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matt. 6:33), and he promised that when those are our priorities, our basic needs will be provided. Are you prepared for that glorious day when Jesus comes again?
As you pray, invite God to empower you by the Holy Spirit to pursue a kingdom agenda.
