The psalms were a songbook for God’s people in the Old Testament and they are still a songbook for us today. These writings teach that creation reveals God to us.

Psalm 19 says that creation speaks to us, singing us a song that provides us with clear messages about God’s glory and who he is.

In Psalm 104 we find a song of gratitude for God’s physical provision for not only humans, but also for wider creation. “From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work. You cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the human heart, oil to make the face shine, and bread to strengthen the human heart.” Psalm 104:13-15

This world is our home and God wants us to care for the environment because he does. Psalm 104 reflects a proactive interest by God in looking after mountains, earth and cattle. Whether or not this is purely for human enjoyment is a bigger question, but either way, we need to care for the things that He cares about.

Response: Ponder some more. What do other psalms tell us about God’s creation and its intrinsic value? What does God’s creation tell us about God?
